Youth & Children's Ministries
Welcome to Youth & Children's Ministries at First Moravian Church!
At First Moravian, young people are vitally important members of our faith community. We seek to learn, grow, and have fun together as part of a spiritual formation program that incorporates worship, study, fellowship, and service. For information about the opportunities you see here, or to become involved with our Youth and Children's Ministries programs at First Moravian, contact Meredith Cohoon, Director of Christian Education, at email@example.com.
Nursery Care (Birth-3 Years)
Nursery care is provided on Sunday mornings during Sunday School and Worship from 10:00am-12:00pm. Staffing is provided by Preferred Childcare and members from our congregational nursery team. The Nursery is located downstairs in New Fellowship Hall (the brick building to the left of the Sanctuary) at the upper end of the parking lot.
Children's Ministries (Preschool-5th Grade)
Sunday School. Each Sunday morning, our children meet downstairs in New Fellowship Hall (the brick building to the left of the Sanctuary) from 10:00-10:50am for Sunday School. We begin with music for all ages from 10:00-10:20am, then break into Preschool (Age 3–Kindergarten) and Older Elementary (1st–5th Grade) classes. Our music time rotates to include instruction in chimes, singing (with guitar accompaniment), and experimenting with other instruments. Our Children's Chimes Choir and Cherub Choir are frequent contributors to Sunday morning worship.
First Moravian Kids. Our Children's Fellowship typically meets once a month for fun, fellowship, spiritual formation, and outreach activities. During the school year, we often meet on Sunday afternoons following worship. During the summer, we enjoy day trips in the area, summer camps at Laurel Ridge, and Vacation Bible School!
Calendar and Upcoming Events. Check out what's happening on our 2017 Children's Ministries Calendar. Upcoming events include:
Wild Wednesday Outing: Wednesday, July 12 (9:30am-4:30pm). Mark your calendars! Our FMC Kids will be taking a day trip to Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville, NC! We’ll depart at FMC at 9:30am, have a picnic lunch at the ranch, then take a guided wagon tour through the park where we’ll get to encounter and feed exotic animals. Afterwards, we’ll head downtown to Mooresville Ice Cream Company for some cool treats, returning the FMC around 4:30pm. The cost for wagon ride tickets at the Ranch is $11.00 (children 2–11, seniors 60+) and $16.00 (adults). If we have a group of 15 or more, the cost will be $10 per person (all ages). This is a great opportunity to invite friends, neighbors, cousins, and grandparents to join us. Safari-goers should plan to pack their own picnic lunch, a water bottle, sunscreen, and bring money for ice cream and tickets. Please RSVP by Sunday, July 2, with the number in your family attending so that wagon ride reservations can be made. Additional drivers and chaperones may be needed for this event. Adults, please indicate if you are able to accompany us!
Moravian Music Festival/Children’s Music Camp: July 24–28. Interested in a great, FREE, full-day summer music opportunity for your kids? The 25th Moravian Music Festival will be held July 23–29, 2017, in Winston-Salem, NC on the campuses of Home Moravian Church and Salem College. Alongside the adult program, the children’s program offers a free week of summer music camp for those who have completed grades K-6. Children’s music and activities cover the entire day, Monday through Friday (July 24–28), so that parents are free to take advantage of all Festival activities. Parents, however, are not required to attend the Festival. The program will be led by two joyful leaders; Beth Juran will lead the younger (K-2nd grade) children in music and movement and Anne Saxon will direct the older (3rd-6th grade) children in a variety of styles of music. The children will present a musical program on Friday afternoon, July 28, at 2:00pm, which will be open to the public. In addition to making music, all of the children will enjoy a variety of music classes during the week, learning about different kinds of music and music-related movement. In the afternoons they will experience the richness of the Old Salem historic district and Moravian traditions and heritage. Register now; forms are available at www.moravianmusicfestival.org and registration is limited to the first 50 students.
Vacation Bible School: August 4–6. This summer, prepare for VBS adventure in the great outdoors! Each evening at “Campfire Kingdom,” we’ll kindle the flame of Christ in the hearts of our campers as we pitch tents, play games, sing favorite camp songs, and roast s’Mor(avian)s around the fire. Don’t miss this chance to invite your friends and "camp out” on the church lawn! Online registration will be available beginning in mid-June. VBS requires many hands to make happen. If you are able to serve on the VBS Planning Team, please let us know!
Provincial Children’s Festival & Lovefeast, August 20 (1:00-6:30pm): On Sunday, August 20, our children’s group will travel to Friedberg Moravian Church for the Provincial Children’s Festival & Lovefeast in celebration of the 1727 Moravian children’s spiritual renewal in Herrnhut, Germany. The Festival–with activities for children of all ages––is from 2:00-4:45pm, followed by a Lovefeast at 5:00pm. We will leave FMC at 1:00pm and return around 6:30pm.
Summer Camps. Laurel Ridge––our Moravian Camp, Conference and Retreat Center––offers a variety of weekend and week-long camps throughout the summer for children who have completed the 1st-5th grades. Our congregation offers generous 50% camperships for members who attend. Visit the Laurel Ridge website for complete information, including summer camp schedules and online registration (now open for Summer 2017). Please contact Meredith Cohoon with any questions or to apply for scholarship funds.
Youth Ministries (6th-12th Grade)
Sunday School. Each Sunday morning, our Middle/High Class meets at 10:00am in the Parlor/Lift Room, located downstairs in New Fellowship Hall (the brick building to the left of the Sanctuary). Led by Pastor Tony Hayworth, the class discusses scripture and topics relevant to today's teens.
Youth Fellowship (MYF). On Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:30pm, our middle/high youth meet in Old Fellowship Hall (the white building behind the Sanctuary) for a time of supper and fellowship, followed by a small group activity or program. We also meet at other times for fun, fellowship, community outreach, or to participate in the worship life and ministry of our congregation.
Wednesday Night Meals. Our Youth Fellowship relies on the generosity of our church family to sustain us each week with simple, delicious meals! We are always looking for volunteers to feed us. Would you be willing to provide one of our Wednesday night meals? You can find all the details and sign up via our online meal calendar.
Calendar and Upcoming Events. Check out the full MYF Spring Calendar to learn more about what we're up to this spring. Upcoming events include:
Graduate Recognition Sunday: Sunday, June 11 (11:00am). On Sunday, June 11, we will recognize high school and college graduates during our 11:00 worship service.
Summer Mission Trip: Sunday, June 25–Saturday, July 1. The departure date is quickly approaching for our Summer Mission Trip to Mission Camp at Laurel Ridge! All youth (rising 7th–12th grade) are invited to join us as we head to the mountains to serve and share God’s love with the residents of Alleghany County. Based out of Higgins Lodge, we will join other youth mission teams from around the Province as we undertake residential repair and community building projects in the area. Pastor Tony and Meredith Cohoon will accompany the group as leaders/chaperones; there is still room for additional adults with hearts for youth and passion for missions (especially any with handyman/construction experience!) to join our team.
Thanks to the generosity of our members and our Congregational Mission Tithe, we have raised a significant amount toward our trip. The funds will be divided among participants to go toward the Mission Camp fee ($450/person), which covers food, lodging, and tools/supplies. The total cost per youth will likely be under $100 for the week. A $50 deposit, along with registration/health forms (available on the FMC "Youth & Children’s Ministries" webpage), is due by Wednesday, June14, to reserve your spot. This is an exciting opportunity for our young people and we invite you to join our prayer that all touched by this experience will encounter the powerful love of God found in Jesus Christ. See sidebar for additional Summer Mission Trip forms and information. Please contact Meredith Cohoon with any questions.
Camps, Conferences, and Retreats. There are many opportunities to participate in events with other Moravian youth each year! Many are held at Laurel Ridge, our Moravian Camp, Conference and Retreat Center located in the beuatiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
CONVO (July 1-6, 2017): Every four years, Moravian youth from far and wide gather for CONVO, the North American Moravian Youth Conference. CONVO––a time of worship, fellowship, learning, and service––is open to youth who have completed 9th-12th grade. This year, CONVO will take place in Washington, DC. A group of youth participants and adult chaperones from the Southern Province will travel by bus (departing from Winston-Salem, NC) to this year's event. Complete information is available on the CONVO registration site. Our congregation offers generous scholarships to members wishing to attend. Please contact Meredith Cohoon with any questions or to apply for scholarship funds.
Summer Camps: Laurel Ridge--our Moravian Camp, Conference and Retreat Center--offers a variety of week-long traditional, arts, eco, and mission camps for middle- and high-schoolers throughout the summer. Our congregation offers generous 50% scholarships for members who attend. Visit the Laurel Ridge website for complete information, including summer camp schedules and online registration (now open for Summer 2017).
